Vietnamese delegation attended the Meeting of WIPO’s General Assembly 2008

The Vietnamese delegation including representatives of the NOIP (Ministry of Science and Technology), Copyright Office of Viet Nam (Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism), Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the UN, WTO and other international organizations in Geneva headed by Mr. Tran Viet Hung, Director General of the NOIP attended the 45th Meeting of WIPO’s General Assembly from 22 to 30 September 2008 in Geneva, Switzerland.

 

The Vietnamese delegation including representatives of the NOIP (Ministry of Science and Technology), Copyright Office of Viet Nam (Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism), Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the UN, WTO and other international organizations in Geneva headed by Mr. Tran Viet Hung, Director General of the NOIP attended the 45th Meeting of WIPO’s General Assembly from 22 to 30 September 2008 in Geneva, Switzerland.

During the 08 working days, Ministers, Ambassadors and delegates from 184 Member States discussed and made important decisions relating to the development of the world intellectual property system and WIPO’s activities such as voting for the position of new Director General of WIPO in the tenure of 2008-2014; adopting reports relating to Committee on Development and Intellectual Property (CDIP), Standing Committee on Copyrights and Related rights (SCCR), Advisory Committee on Enforcement (ACE), Intergovernmental Committee on intellectual property and genetic resources, traditional knowledge and folklore, Standing Committee on the Law of Patents, considering and adopting reports relating to domain names, exchanging priority documents for patent, the implementation of Article 6ter of the Paris Convention, issues relating to the Madrid Union, the Hague Union, adopting issues relating Lisbon Union, IPC Union, PCT Union and Patent Law Treaty.

 

Speaking at the meeting, head of the Vietnamese delegation, Mr. Tran Viet Hung emphasized “creation and innovation are new to the world economy. Therefore, IP protection system is becoming a power tool for each nation’s prosperity” and “Viet Nam hopes WIPO will be successful in the development of a fair IP system, in which creation’s achievements will be worthily compensated, contributing to the promotion of innovation and the economic development whereas the community’s interests are still ensured”.

On this occasion, the Vietnamese delegation also participated some activities on the sideline of the Meeting such as the Meeting among Heads of ASEAN’s IP offices and the new Director General of WIPO to discuss the cooperation possibility between ASEAN and WIPO; the bilateral meeting between the Vietnamese delegation and the new Director General of WIPO; meeting with leaders of some WIPO’s offices (Technical Assistance and Capacity Building Bureau for Asia Pacific, WIPO Global Academy, etc) to discuss and implement some bilateral cooperation programs between NOIP and WIPO, and some other activities.
