Thai Delegation’s Geographical Indications Study Visit to Viet Nam

Within the cooperation framework between the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam (NOIP) and The Department of Intellectual Property of Thailand (DIP), a delegation headed by Ms. Kulanee Issadisai, Deputy Director General of DIP paid an official visit on geographical indications (GIs) to Vietnam from 10 – 15 August 2011. Apart from DIP officials, the delegation to Vietnam this time also consists of GIs producers, namely Praewa Kalasin Thai silk, Chiangmai Celadon Pottery and Chiangrai Phulae pineapple.
During their stay in Vietnam, the delegation had a working visit to the NOIP to study GIs protection system in Vietnam. Director General Tran Viet Hung, Deputy Director General Tran Huu Nam, Directors and officials of relevant Divisions had an effective working session with the delegation. At the meeting, the two Offices exchanged views in establishing and operating GIs system, in which the DIP provided the NOIP with useful experiences in setting up a management and control system of GIs products as well as marketing these products. The two sides also agreed upon signing of a cooperative implementation plan for the next period in order to continuously strengthen cooperative ties by sharing lessons learnt from the establishment and operation of intellectual property (IP) system, creating favorable conditions for the registration and enforcement of IPRs of nationals of each countries, as well as coordinating positions at regional and international forums on IP.

Besides, the delegation also made field trips where they could witness by themselves different products granted/ prepared for registration of GIs or collective mark, namely Bat Trang porcelain (already granted collective mark), Dai Hoang - “Ngu” banana (already granted GIs), Hoa Binh black sugarcane ( to be registered as collective mark), Cao Phong orange (to be registered as collective mark), and Mai Chau brocatelle (to be registered as collective mark). The delegation was warmly welcomed by the provincial Departments of Science and Technology, People’s Committees of the districts and communes where the products are produced and managed, producers and relevant agencies of the localities. A number of questions had been raised by the Thai delegates as well as Thai experiences had been shared to Vietnamese producers and local authorities regarding the management and control of quality and promotion of Thai GIs products..
In the evening of 15 August, the delegation departed for their home country, successfully completing their working program in Viet Nam
