Handling of applications for trademarks
The handling of trademark applications in 2020 achieved significant results. The number of applications for national and international trademarks with completed substantive examination increased by 9.7% in comparison with 2019, of which the number of protection titles granted increased by 16.2%.
In 2020, IP Viet Nam focused on improving the quality and productivity of examination through various solutions, such as improving procedures and methods of handling applications; reaching consensuses on professional contents relating to trademark examination; and encouraging examiners to improve their productivity as well as actively participate in professional activities.
In 2020, the number of applications for national and international trademarks filed with IP Viet Nam increased by 1.6% compared to 2019. Despite difficulties relating to social distancing during the Covid-19 (which caused a significant impact on the application examination process due to many employees had to be put under self-quarantine), the staff of the Trademark Examination Center and the Geographical Indication and International Trademark Examination Center have endeavored to overcome with various measures such as working overtime and working on holidays to complete the number of examined trademark applications as the Office had planned. Consequently, the handling of trademark applications in 2020 achieved significant results, including: requests for amendment and licensing was prosecuted quickly and on time; formality examination was basically on time; the number of applications for national and international trademarks with completed substantive examination increased by 9.7% in comparison with 2019, of which the number of protection titles granted increased by 16.2%.
In addition to performing trademark examination for regular work at the Office, trademark examiners also participated in other professional activities, such as joining the ASEAN Trademark Taskforce and providing comments on amendments and supplements of the Vietnamese version of the Nice Classification of Goods and Services (version 11-2020), etc.

In order to improve the quality of trademark examination, the Trademark Examination Center has coordinated to organize a number of professional seminars to reach consensuses on professional contents relating to trademark examination. On October 31, 2020, the seminar of "Issues to be solved to improve the quality of trademark examination" was organized by the IP Viet Nam. IP Viet Nam also launched Staff training courses on industrial design and trademark examination, in which an intensive training on trademark examination was to provide the trainees practical understanding for assessing trademarks similarity in dealing with IPR infringement. The event had the earnest participation of senior officials from the Enforcement and Appeal Division and experts from the enforcement agencies. Through particular examples provided by lecturers, students have a better understanding of the basis of identifying rights infringements, types of infringements that often occur in real life, perspectives and operational assessments of enforcement agencies.

In 2021, the Trademark Examination Center will deploy search tools that use artificial intelligence to speed up the search engine. The center will also encode the classification of similar goods and services in order to increase productivity and quality of application examination.
